Sarasota Courthouse Wedding Photographer
Planning a Sarasota courthouse wedding? Whether you’re eloping, keeping things intimate, or simply want a stress-free way to get married, the Sarasota County Courthouse is one of Florida’s most beautiful courthouse wedding locations. As a Sarasota courthouse wedding photographer, I’ve photographed countless courthouse ceremonies and put together this complete guide covering everything from getting your marriage license to the best places for portraits afterward.
And yes it’s an absolute vibe.

We’re talking Sarasota County Courthouse: charm, history, and those perfect Florida vibes all in one place. No fluorescent lighting. No cold, impersonal hallways. Just a stunning Spanish-style building full of character, soul, and the kind of energy that makes your ceremony feel real.
What Is a Sarasota Courthouse Wedding?
A Sarasota courthouse wedding is a civil ceremony performed at the Sarasota County Courthouse. It’s simple, intimate, and honestly one of the most underrated ways to get married in Florida. The ceremony itself is quick but the experience is full of meaning, connection, and those real, unscripted moments that make your day unforgettable.
No seating charts. No floral drama. No Aunt Susan’s 17th dietary restriction. Just you, your person, and the beginning of forever.

Why Couples Love a Sarasota Courthouse Wedding
The Architecture Is Stunning
The Sarasota County Courthouse is not your average government building. We’re talking Spanish-style architecture, historic charm, and a building that looks like it belongs in a vintage romance novel. It’s picture-perfect and your photos will prove it.

Liza + Will | Sarasota Courthouse Wedding
Liza and Will drove down from Tampa after spotting the Historic Sarasota County Courthouse on Instagram. No big venue, no long guest list — just them, a beautiful morning, and that Spanish architecture framing every single shot. This is exactly what a Sarasota courthouse wedding looks like.
It’s Stress-Free and Intimate
Courthouse weddings strip away all the noise. No massive guest list, no vendor coordination, no months of planning stress. It’s just the two of you and maybe a few of your closest people focused entirely on the moment. That’s magic.
Another option: use the courthouse for the ceremony and then celebrate at a venue with more people after. I’ve had couples do this at Marina Jacks, Art Ovation, The Westin, and The Hyatt and it’s AWESOME. Best of both worlds.
It’s Affordable Without Sacrificing Style
Weddings are expensive but a Sarasota courthouse wedding is as affordable as it gets without giving up elegance. The savings? Put them toward the honeymoon, a new home, or both.
Your Whole Day Is Still Yours
Courthouse ceremonies are quick. You can say “I do” and still have the entire day to celebrate however you want beach champagne, sunset dinner, driving off together. Freedom and flow.
It’s Just the Two of You
There’s something deeply special about stripping everything back to just you and your person. No distractions. No performance. Just pure, unfiltered love and you can feel it in the air.

Mikaely + Chris | Sarasota Courthouse Elopement
Mikaely and Chris flew in from Cincinnati with one plan: make it official in downtown Sarasota. An Anthropologie lace gown, portraits along the bay, and an elopement that felt completely and entirely theirs. No performance, no distractions — just the two of them and a courthouse that felt made for this exact moment.
How to Plan a Sarasota Courthouse Wedding: Step-by-Step
This is everything you need to know from the first step to the last “I do.”
Step 1: Get Your Marriage License
Who needs one? Both of you you must apply together in person.
Where? The Sarasota County Clerk of Court, located inside the courthouse at 2000 Main Street, Sarasota, FL 34237.
What to bring: Valid government-issued photo ID for both of you, your Date of Birth, and your Social Security numbers you don’t need the card, just the number.
Cost: The marriage license fee in Sarasota County is $86.00. Florida residents who complete a Premarital Counseling Course can marry the same day instead of waiting 3 days — the course waives the waiting period.
Waiting period: Florida residents must wait 3 days after getting the license before the ceremony can happen. Out-of-state residents have no waiting period you can get married the same day.
Hours: The Clerk’s office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
Parking: There is paid parking in the garage adjacent to the courthouse on Ringling Boulevard. Street parking is also available nearby. Budget extra time to find a spot, especially on busy weekday mornings.

Step 2: Arrive at the Courthouse
There are no appointments courthouse weddings at Sarasota County are walk-in only, first-come, first-served. Plan to arrive early, especially if you’re going on a Friday. Friday afternoons in particular can have longer wait times.
Where to go: Head to the Clerk of Court’s office inside the main courthouse building at 2000 Main Street. They’ll direct you to the appropriate space for your ceremony based on availability.
What happens when you arrive: You’ll check in with the Clerk’s office, confirm your license, and wait to be called for your ceremony. The whole process from arrival to walking out married typically takes 30 to 90 minutes depending on how busy it is.
Step 3: The Ceremony
How long is it? The ceremony itself is usually 5 to 15 minutes. Short, sweet, and completely real.
💡 Angela Tip: Courthouse ceremonies move quickly. I always arrive 15–20 minutes early so I have time to find the best spot and get settled before the officiant begins. You’ll never feel rushed — only ready.
Who officiates? A judge or court clerk officiates the ceremony. You don’t need to bring your own officiant.
Can you write your own vows? The official ceremony uses a standard legal script, but many couples add personal words before or after the legal portion. Talk to the clerk about what’s allowed in your chosen space.
Can you bring guests? Yes! The number depends on the space you’re assigned (more on that below). Intimate spaces like the Judge’s Chambers hold a small number of guests; the courtyard can accommodate a few more.
💡 Angela Tip: If family is joining you, we’ll photograph everyone immediately after the ceremony while everyone’s still together — before people start drifting toward their cars. Those group images happen first, then we head off for romantic portraits just the two of you.
Do you need witnesses? Yes Florida law requires two witnesses who are at least 18 years old. They need to be present and sign the marriage certificate. If you don’t bring your own, the clerk’s office may be able to assist.
💡 Angela Tip: The certificate signing happens right after the ceremony — it’s one of my favorite moments to photograph. More joyful and real than most people expect. Make sure your witnesses know to stay close for it rather than stepping out of the room.
Can you bring flowers or decorations? Simple personal touches like a bouquet are totally welcome. Full decorating or setup isn’t typically permitted in shared courthouse spaces.
Can you bring your dog? Service animals are permitted. Personal pets are generally not allowed inside the courthouse building but they’re absolutely welcome for outdoor portraits after!
Can you hire a photographer? 100% yes and I highly recommend it. See below.
💡 Angela Tip: One thing I always tell courthouse couples: don’t underestimate how emotional the moment gets. Even the most practical, low-key couples are surprised by the feeling. That’s exactly why having someone there to capture it matters more than you’d think.
Step 4: Portraits
Right after the ceremony, step outside. The courthouse exterior with its Spanish architecture, arched windows, and warm Florida light is absolutely stunning for portraits. From there, you’re minutes away from some of the best photo locations in Sarasota (more on that below).
💡 Angela Tip: If you’re planning portraits after the ceremony, bring comfortable shoes for walking between downtown locations. We can always swap into heels once we reach our portrait spot — I’ll let you know when.
Step 5: Celebrate
The world is yours. Pop champagne on Siesta Key. Walk the bayfront. Head to a rooftop dinner. Or just drive off together with the windows down and the music up. The best part about a courthouse wedding is that the rest of the day belongs entirely to you.

Ceremony Spaces at the Sarasota County Courthouse
Here’s where it gets really good the Sarasota courthouse isn’t just one room. You have options, and each one brings a completely different energy.

1. The Classic Courtroom
The OG. Dark wood, regal vibes, historic gravitas. Forget the Law & Order scenes this room has charm. If you want tradition and a classic, timeless setting, this is it.

2. The Judge’s Chambers Marriage Parlor
Smaller, more personal, and completely intimate. It feels like stepping into a vintage magazine just you, your partner, and the judge. Perfect for couples who want to keep things quiet, cozy, and deeply meaningful.

3. The Courtyard: A Hidden Gem
Yes the Sarasota Courthouse has a sunken outdoor courtyard. Greenery, open sky, natural light, and that gorgeous historic tower as your backdrop. If you want a ceremony that feels like it’s actually yours not a waiting room this is the one. The light for photos alone is worth it.
Each space is unique. Each one is beautiful. And no matter which one you end up in, it’s going to feel like the perfect place to start forever.

Diana and Robert drove up from Naples and turned their one-year anniversary into the weekend they made it official. Their whole family surrounded them in the courtyard, they stayed at the Ritz-Carlton, and they built a full Sarasota weekend around one courthouse morning. Proof that intimate doesn’t have to mean alone.
