Sarasota Courthouse Wedding | Liza + Will

Some couples just know. Liza and Will have been together two years and they already have that thing. The kind of connection that makes your job as a photographer feel less like work and more like witnessing something. They moved to Tampa from Virginia about a year ago, and when they spotted the Historic Sarasota County Courthouse on Instagram and found my Sarasota courthouse wedding photography, they drove straight down. No big venue, no long guest list. Just them, a beautiful morning, and a courthouse that looks like it was built for exactly this kind of moment. As their Sarasota courthouse wedding photographer, I can honestly say this session reminded me why I do what I do.

A 9AM Courthouse Wedding in Sarasota

We started at nine in the morning, which is honestly the best kept secret for a Sarasota courthouse wedding. The light is soft, the crowds are nonexistent, and the whole place feels like it belongs to you. The Spanish colonial architecture, the iron gates, the stone columns, the courtyard plantings… there is a romance to this building that you cannot manufacture. Liza and Will felt it from the second we arrived. The chemistry between these two was instant and real, and that made every frame feel effortless. Will is naturally funny and kept Liza smiling the whole time. She has this way of looking at him that says everything.

They came from Virginia and only moved to Tampa about a year ago, and they already found their people, their city, and their moment all at once. Liza mentioned she had been watching Instagram reels of Florida elopements for months before deciding this was the one. There is something so satisfying about that. The courthouse pulled them down from Tampa and gave them the morning of their lives. If you are considering a Sarasota courthouse elopement, I cannot recommend it enough. The intimacy of a small ceremony in a setting this stunning is hard to beat.

Tips for Your Sarasota Courthouse Wedding

If you are dreaming of a Sarasota courthouse wedding, here is everything you need to know to make it happen smoothly. The courthouse is stunning, the process is straightforward, and a quiet morning ceremony here is one of the most genuinely romantic things you can do.

Get your marriage license first. Florida requires a marriage license before any ceremony. You can apply online through the Sarasota Clerk of Court and there is a 3-day waiting period unless you complete a state-approved premarital course. Out-of-state residents have the same waiting period. The license costs $93.50 without the premarital course, or $61.00 if you complete an approved course. Florida licenses are valid for 60 days.

Book your ceremony with a deputy clerk. A deputy clerk can perform your wedding ceremony in one of the courthouse’s beautiful settings including the Historic Sarasota County Courtroom, the Sunken Garden Courtyard, or the Vintage-Style Marriage Parlor. The ceremony fee is $30. After the ceremony, certified copies of your marriage license are $3.00 each.

Arrive early. This is not just practical advice, it is the best creative decision you will make. At 9AM the courthouse is calm, the light is gold, and you have the place nearly to yourself. By midday it gets busier and the overhead light loses its magic. Book the earliest slot you can.

Hire a photographer who knows the space. The courthouse has so many incredible spots… the iron gates, the stone columns, the courtyard, the steps, the archways… and knowing which ones catch light at what time of day makes a massive difference. This is my home turf and I know exactly where to take you for the best images. You can also browse other Sarasota proposal and portrait locations if you want to combine your courthouse ceremony with additional portraits around the city.
