Photographers in Sarasota FL: How to Find the Right One for Your Session

Let’s be real: searching “photographers in Sarasota FL” brings up a LOT of options. And if you’ve never hired a photographer before (or even if you have), it can feel totally overwhelming to figure out who’s actually the right fit for you. So I put this guide together to help you cut through the noise, know what questions to ask, and feel confident going into the booking process.

I’m Angela Moon, a Sarasota-based photographer specializing in weddings, proposals, engagements, maternity, newborn, and family sessions. I’ve been doing this for years and I genuinely love it, so I also know exactly what separates a great photographer from one who just looks good on Instagram. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Hiring a Local Sarasota Photographer Actually Matters

You might think any talented photographer can show up to Siesta Key or Myakka River State Park and nail it. And sure, technically. But there’s something really special about working with someone who knows the area inside and out.

I know which direction the light hits the water at Lido Key an hour before sunset. I know where to stand at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens to get those dreamy banyan tree shots. I know the parking situation at Siesta Key Beach on a Saturday and how to work around it so we aren’t scrambling. These are the things that only come from actually being here, shooting here, living here. It makes a difference in your photos, I promise.

What to Look for When Searching for Photographers in Sarasota FL

Not all photographers are created equal and honestly, the search process matters. Here’s what I’d tell my own best friend if she were looking for a photographer.

Their Portfolio Should Make You Feel Something

Scroll through their work and pay attention to how it makes you feel. Are you drawn in? Do you love the colors, the mood, the way they capture emotion? Style is everything in photography and you want someone whose natural style lines up with the vibe you’re going for. Check out my portfolio here to see if we’re a good match.

Read the Reviews (For Real, Read Them)

Google reviews and testimonials tell you so much more than a pretty Instagram feed does. Look for things like: Did they make their clients feel comfortable? Did they communicate well? Were the photos delivered on time? The technical stuff matters, but so does the experience of actually working with them.

Make Sure the Vibe Matches

This one is big. You’re going to spend an hour or more with this person on one of the most meaningful days (or moments) of your life. Your energies have to vibe. If their brand feels stiff and corporate and you’re more of a “barefoot on the beach, laughing until we cry” type of person, that’s worth paying attention to. You should feel relaxed and yourself in front of the camera, and a big part of that is who’s behind it.

Ask About Pricing Upfront

Good photographers are transparent about their pricing. You shouldn’t have to dig through three pages of a website to find out what a session costs. For reference, my sessions start at $625 for maternity, $400 for families, and weddings start at $3,400. You can see all the details on The Deets page. No surprises, no mystery pricing.

Types of Sessions Sarasota Photographers Offer

There are so many reasons to hire a photographer in Sarasota. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s popular in this area.

Beach Family Sessions

This is probably the most popular session type in Sarasota, and for good reason. The beaches here are absolutely stunning and families visiting from out of town (or locals who want to document this season of life) book these constantly. Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key are all incredible options depending on the look you want. Check out some of my past sessions to see the locations in action.

Engagement Sessions

Whether you just got engaged or you’re looking to capture this season before you tie the knot, engagement sessions in Sarasota are a dream. Sunset on Lido Beach? Chef’s kiss. See what a Lido Beach proposal session looks like when the light is doing everything right.

Proposals

Yes, I do proposals and yes, they are one of my absolute favorite things to photograph. The raw, unfiltered reaction when someone says yes? I will never not get emotional. If you’re planning a proposal in Sarasota, please hire a photographer. You will want those photos forever. See how a Ringling Museum proposal turned out for some inspo.

Maternity and Newborn Sessions

I became a mom and everything shifted. I understand now in a way I didn’t before just how fast this chapter flies by. Maternity sessions at Myakka River State Park or out on Siesta Key Public Beach are some of my favorites to shoot. The light, the landscapes, the belly. All of it hits different when you know what it actually feels like to be in that moment.

Sarasota Weddings

Sarasota is a wedding destination for a reason. The venues are stunning, the weather (outside of peak summer) is perfect, and the overall vibe of this city is just so good. From intimate beach ceremonies to full celebrations at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, I’ve done it all and I love every single one. Peek at a Selby Gardens wedding or a downtown Sarasota courthouse elopement to see what’s possible.

Questions to Ask Before You Book a Sarasota Photographer

Once you’ve narrowed down your list, here are a few questions worth asking before you hit “book.”

How many sessions have you shot at this specific location? Location experience matters more than people think. A photographer who has shot at Siesta Key dozens of times is going to know exactly where to stand and when, versus someone figuring it out on the fly during your session.

What does delivery look like? Ask about turnaround time and how many photos you’ll receive. You don’t want to be waiting three months and end up with 10 edited images. Know what you’re getting before you book.

Do you have a second shooter or backup plan? For weddings especially, this is a question worth asking. Things happen. You want to know there’s a plan.

Can I see a full gallery from a session or wedding? Highlights and Instagram posts are great, but seeing a full set of images gives you a much more realistic sense of consistency and range.

Why Book Angela Moon Photography

I know I’m a little biased here, but I genuinely believe in what I do and I think you’ll feel that from the second we start talking. I’ve been photographing people in Sarasota and across Southwest Florida for years and I love this work with my whole heart. My goal every single time is for you to look back at your photos and feel all of it, exactly the way it felt in that moment.

I’m fun, I’m laid back, I will absolutely make you stop to watch the sunset mid-session (you’re welcome), and I will work my tail off to make sure your photos are everything you were hoping for and then some. I’m based in Sarasota, married 15 years, mom to a pretty dope toddler, and I take way too many photos of the sky. Basically I’m your person.
